I was asked to write about the constitution and what it meant to me, I must confess I have not read the whole document or knew the basics before I wrote this. It astounds me about the diversity of the rights and its definitions, and what it actually means.
Focusing on one would be the Right of Freedom of expression. This right allows me to write this piece, allows me to voice my opinions and share my views. Below is an extract from http://www.westerncape.gov.za/eng/pubs/constitutions/5297/4#15- with a summarized version of what Freedom of expression means.

I am a creative of sorts and being allowed to be who I am and what I want to be is a right I do not want to give up. We are individuals from birth and then go through the conformity of schooling and told what we can and cannot say or do, where we can go and who we can be seen with. We are all taught the same yet each person is not the same and turns out differently ie a class of 31 pupils all getting taught the same subjects by the same teachers will not all turn out to be lawyers for example but you will have the artist, the doctor, the fisherman, the homemaker, the teacher and so on, it is because of our right of expression that drives the economics of this Country. We are all individuals we all face different challenges but it is our right to express these be it be on canvas, through film or by writing we all have the right to share. Use it you deserve to be heard, you deserve to be unique and act on it keeping in mind that the other rights of the community and not cause harm or discrimination to others.
What does Freedom of Expression mean to me? Simply put it allows me to be myself and to be the person I want to be without fear of prosecution.

The background: We The People is an initiative from Media Monitoring Africa aimed at educating ordinary South Africans about the constitution. Many of us talk about it in the abstract sense without really knowing what’s in there. Our hope is that we will get people to understand why living in a diverse society means accepting that others have rights, and those rights should be respected.
